Well xorloser confirms it http://twitter.com/xorloser/status/21554119576
I know he was interested in geohots work.
People saying there are also other large known groups who confirm it as working. So from the current rumours it sounds like it is real!
But as ps3news say, why pay $120-$180 for it when you can wait for other hackers to hack this hack and distribute it for free.
So with all hacks, wait and see until everyone says its real, then wait for a free version :D
Thanks for the link though, but looks like all the ps3ers are trying to get to it and has used its entire bandwidth already, so site is now down.

The wonderful part? Thanks to sony, this can now be sold legally (if it is something that can be homemade, then instructions & code can be distributed legally)...this device will fall under the same rules as jailbreaking an iPhone...and it is all thanks to the removal of OtherOS. I never thought I would say this, but...Thanks Sony!
Think of the wonders...
A distro of linux that runs within GameOS...GameOS native Ports of GIMP, XBMC, and OpenOffice...the ability to mod games to add features! Wow...I really hope this is for real...the PS3 could become a really nice system (finally).

I'm going to have to play the wait and see game on this one. Too many factors to consider.
-Sony firmware updates making this useless
-Blu ray burner and discs are still rather expensive.
-HDD space

and the dongle can be updated. SO when sony release a new firmware, and if they manage to hack past the changes, there would be an update you can download and add to the dongle to make it work again. This of course depends on them getting past the changes.
as marcusita said, you dont been a bluray burner or discs.
and as for hdd space, hard drives are pretty cheap now, I can get a 500GB 2.5" sata for
£43 from ebuyer, and its a samsung hdd. They say it will also be able to use usb drives, so hdd space isnt really an issue when for the same price of one ps3 game you can get a 500gb hdd.

If it is all just a scam using hidden dev units, it would be a huge scam. There are a lot of trusted hackers that have already confirmed this working, and as yet, not one hacker has stated any hard facts against the hack...plenty of negative conjecture, opinion, and theory...but no one is saying, "I tried it and it does not work as advertised"
I guess we will all have to wait a while before we can be 100% sure about this one.
As a side note, it appears that this will not be a downloadable hack. The USB key is some kind of specialized device that has no known file system, and which will not hex copy. If it is in fact upgradable, then they will have to release a specialized tool and drivers. The good news is that there are a lot of little companies that don't mind stealing a design...so we will probably see devices like this for under $20 by the end of the year.

And I thought firmware updates were only necessary if you want to play online?

Unfortunately, some games require it to, for instance, if you are on firmware 3.15 and you try to play Red Dead Redemption, you will be requested to update in order to play the game.

Which means that Sony could block this hack next update and you would be forced to update to play the game.

This just jumped in my mind, but what if the chip on the USB device is an Atmega IC used to act like system-on-chip. By the pictures, it looks like the IC has 44 pinouts, so that makes it even more convincing. If that's the case, you can't just use an ordinary USB drive, it'll have to be a special drive with an Atmega chip.

True exclusives disprove that "theory"...and the same works in reverse ~ MOST games they make for Xbox they make for the PS3 AND PC so you really don't need anything else. But that's neither here nor there, is off topic PLUS quite inflammatory so please refrain from derailing the subject at hand.

I was thinking that too; thinking that maybe I could just flash an app onto my arduino duemilanove and call it a day...but I guess only time will tell.

TRUE GENTLEMEN OF THE NEWS WOULD BE A GREAT TIME AND NEWS bad news... Let me explain:
1. NO SERIOUS WORK DONE BY HACKERS OR RESEARCHERS.
2. MATERIAL IS MADE LIKE THE MAGIC BATTERY FOR PSP WITH SONY TOOLS.
In short, PS3 has fallen to the very tools you use in your SAT Sony... that if Sony can plug it into the next update.. just have to cancel the initial boot usb to close the bar, because the boss is syscon."
